Small Scale Living
Albert Mews, Chingford
This set of five identical mews houses on a tightly constrained urban back-land site in north London have been designed to bring lightness and joy to a rather dour and soulless setting. The dwellings are arranged to maximise efficiency and light, while maintaining privacy. They are also designed to be good neighbours to surrounding houses, with care being taken to avoid any sense of overbearing, enclosure or overlooking. Each house has a bench next to its front door, bedrooms are at ground floor level and kitchen and living spaces are at first floor level, along with a generous screened terrace.
Although the scheme was received positively by the local authority, sadly the scheme foundered due to legal and technical issues relating to site access.
