Small Scale Living
Folded House, 30 Ferry Street
This pocket site next to a slipway on the Isle of Dogs has an amazing southern aspect towards Greenwich and the Cutty Sark. As well as taking advantage of the stunning position, we designed the house to promote a sense of neighbourliness while also respecting the privacy, light and outlook of adjoining homes; a challenging task given the physical site constraints. We drew inspiration from the weathered character and layering on the surrounding river walls, with a masonry plinth providing protection against flooding. Inside, a considered sequence of spaces leads to a living room perched at the corner of the slipway and river wall, framing picture-window views in multiple directions.
Although regretably not realised, the project exemplifies our site-specific approach to architecture that always seeks to project personality and flair as well as consideration for context.
