Palmerston Road, Buckhurst Hill

This recently completed pair of houses in Buckhurst Hill, Essex, takes design cues from the neighbouring locally listed Victorian villas. Our appointment covered the design up to planning determination. We patiently developed a refined set of details, with flush precast arches and piers set within tonally consistent stock brickwork forming a coherent architectural language distilled from the most elegant surrounding buildings.

The scale and form were carefully related to the surrounding silhouettes, incorporating prominent front-facing gables, canted bay windows at ground floor and arched entrances. Textural elements such as quarter-turned brickwork below the gables and patterned brickwork on the bays reference historic detailing while presenting a contemporary face distinguished by depth and character.

Having been constructed, we are delighted by how successfully and stylishly our pair of new villas take their place in the urban fabric.
