Small Scale Living

West London House, Chiswick

Our clients owned an end of terrace four-storey house in Stamford Brook (LB Hounslow) which, while substantial, was frustratingly limited by the narrowness of its floorplate, making the ordinary business of everyday life cumbersome and spatially awkward. When the altogether unforeseen opportunity to acquire the adjoining disused Territorial Army building became an option, the opportunity for the more generous lateral spaces for cooking, dining and entertaining the clients craved arose. This pretty unique set of circumstances has led to the realisation of a singular building – a four storey extension to a four storey house, taking a prominent part in the streetscape.

The new addition, almost a house in its own right, and certainly an equal partner to the host building, really exemplifies our studio’s design preoccupations; not only that the spirit of the architecture should be unmistakably contemporary and related to context, but also that it should be geometrically expressive and bold – full of moments, full of light and interconnected multi-level spaces. Together, the combined dwelling now provides 500 sqm (5,380 sq ft) of accommodation.

We led the project from design to planning consent through to construction under a traditional building contract. It was completed in May 2025.
