Small Scale Living
White Lodge, Hampstead
This large, detached house on a leafy private close had suffered from unsympathetic alterations, leaving the interiors disjointed and poorly suited to the needs of a growing family. Although located within a conservation area, the existing building was of limited architectural quality. Our design sought to reconcile the clients’ wish for a contemporary aesthetic with the planners’ requirement for sensitivity to the local character.
The scheme introduced a generous new single-storey extension to the rear, opening the house onto the garden and creating a sequence of bright, flexible family living spaces. At the front, a reconfigured entrance and new porch provide a more legible arrival and improve the overall balance of the façade. At first floor, extensions were designed in keeping with the existing roof and dormer details, ensuring continuity with the original building.
The proposal established an architectural language that is both contemporary and well integrated with its context. Planning consent was secured from the London Borough of Barnet in March 2022.
