BECKENHAM

BECKENHAM

BECKENHAM, SOUTH LONDON

Set in a leafy Victorian suburb, the site is currently occupied by a much compromised Edwardian building most recently used by a local theatre. The building had become a financial burden to the theatre trust. Happily, the forthcoming development has enabled this well loved institution to secure its future in other nearby and more accessible venues.

Our proposals take full advantage of the natural prominence of the apex shape of the site. The leading edge of our proposal marks this by inverting a bull-nose, thereby recalling the emphasis given to prominent corners in nearby older Victorian and Edwardian buildings but without directly mimicking them. This is consistent with our broader design approach, which has been to consider the sensitive Victorian and Edwardian context by picking up on traditional details such has the stepped brick cornice, vertical brick lintels and arched windows but refining them to a more contemporary vernacular. Materials have been chosen carefully to bed in our proposals comfortably with its neighbours. This four-storey residential scheme would see 15 units to come forward, making a valuable contribution to LB Bromley’s housing supply target.

We have recently submitted a planning application to the London Borough of Bromley and are awaiting a decision.
