FOLDED HOUSE

FOLDED HOUSE

FOLDED HOUSE, ISLE OF DOGS, LONDON

Set on the southern tangent in the bend of the river Thames forming the Isle of Dogs, this pocket site next to a slipway offers a fantastic outlook south towards Greenwich and the Cutty Sark. We have developed a contemporary architectural response that supports a feeling of neighbourliness and a respect for the privacy, light and outlook of surrounding existing dwellings. The design picks up on the pleasingly weathered qualities and stratification of the river walls – we have set our proposals on a masonry plinth, designed to mitigate and protect against the effects of flooding and natural timber panelling, which will weather to silver over the coming years. Inside, a sinuous and connected sequence of spaces will draw one through the house to the living room perched just behind the corner of the slipway and river wall offering picture window views out in several directions.
